Mission
The Sovereign-class starship marks Starfleet’s newest and most advanced vessel in a lineage stretching back to the original Constitution class vessels of the twenty-third century. Designed to serve in a variety of capacities, from combat to long-range exploration, the Sovereign-class is better suited for tactical and supports. With a tough, no nonsense design heavily geared toward long-term survivability, the Sovereign-class is intended to be the leading instrument of Starfleet’s mission well into the twenty-fifth century.
Features
The Sovereign-class was one of several major new vessel designs influenced by a strengthening of Starfleet’s defensive capabilities. The most significant new design element was the elimination of a large dorsal between the primary (saucer) and secondary (engineering) hulls augmenting the structural integrity, thus making it less vulnerable. Another advance was the modified warp drive. In 2368, Starfleet had discovered the existing warp drives were having deleterious effects on certain areas of space. The Sovereign-class was among the first starships to feature a modified warp drive which would not harm the fabric of space. This modified warp drive is now standard throughout Starfleet. The Sovereign-class starship has been hailed as one of the best balances of exploratory and tactical capability since the Constitution-class of the last century.
Background
Work on the prototype USS Sovereign was begun in 2365. But after the initial encounter with the Borg later that year, by the USS Enterprise NCC 1071 D, Starfleet began to augment and modify the design of the the Sovereign to defend against Borg attack. In 2266, after becoming aware of the magnitude of the threat posed by the Borg with the defeat at Wolf 359, Starfleet shifted its focus to defense. The Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) made a number of recommendations for strategic and tactical capability upgrades throughout the fleet, among them several of the concepts which would be applied to the new Sovereign-class. The USS Sovereign was commissioned in 2369, and the USS Enterprise NCC-1707-E was launched two years later. The Enterprise saw a number of significant design modifications the result of what was learned during the Sovereign’s shakedown cruise. Based on the results from both ships’ initial service, production of additional Sovereign-class starships is currently underway.
